I d say dont burn the bridge yourself, thats all you can do. Also if the bridge is burnt because of you doing what is best for you, especially after giving you a hard time for a year, for me personally, so be it. It is your right to switch jobs or quit and stay home with the baby. I m not from the US so I dont know the exact details of maternity leave. If he takes it personally its not on you. Employees are replacable so are employers.
If u feel guilty the man child is bound to sniff that and make u feel really bad about it. And dont feel guilty, you need to do whats best for your family. It's business baby! If there were cuts, they'd lay you off and say "so sorry, it's business." I find women care SO MUCH more about their job/team/boss than anyone would ever care about them. People quit with less notice, under "worse" circumstances, etc and don't blink an eye. They've shown their cards with what they offer in terms of pay, mat leave, and bonuses, etc. Especially if you already found another option with better pay. Even my team knew how the company had repeatedly dicked me over, regarding pay, bonuses, and title changes that I was skipped over. I felt partially responsible because I loved my team (hated my boss/es) and didn't want to dump more work on them. I stayed employed only so I wouldn't lose my insurance. They didn't pay me a penny when I was out.

You have some emotions invested because you are obviously a thoughtful person. Everyone else views this from a completely black/white view. They treated me horribly for the year leading up to my leave, and I expressed concern to him leading up to my leave for almost that entire year, but the fact of the matter is I was offered a WFH job that’s paying me over $20k a year more than my hospital job. I’m trying to think of the best way to give notice without burning a bridge in case I want to go back one day. I’m pretty close with my manager, who is a bit of a man child and hands down the most dramatic supervisor I’ve ever had-works with all women and somehow has more drama than anyone.

I’m not returning to my job after maternity leave (which feels like a little dirty even though I was just on FMLA, not work provided maternity leave pay) and I genuinely have no idea how to do it! I know they’ll be kind of blindsided since so many people have been quitting and I got a lot of “when you come back” things the days leading up to my leave.
